Making custom carpets for Rosewood is a project Mengaiku took on many years ago. To be honest, when the request first came in, we didn’t treat it as just another order — because what Rosewood expects from a space is never as simple as “laying down a nice carpet.”
What were we refining for Rosewood?
In Rosewood’s rooms and corridors, every carpet has to follow the character of its space. Dimensions, palette, pattern — none of it comes from a template; it’s worked out step by step, from the hotel’s overall temperament.
We wanted it understated yet never plain; easy on the eye yet never stealing the show. We chose low-saturation tones that hold their calm, so when they sit alongside the walls and furniture, the whole space naturally gains depth.
Hand-knotted vs machine-made: it was never about price
For this project we insisted on hand-knotting. A hand-knotted carpet has a denser base and sturdier pile, and it carries a “living” quality machines can never reproduce — it shifts subtly with the light and the footsteps, growing richer the more it’s used.
From material selection and colour matching to sampling, a project like Rosewood demands many rounds of refinement. Behind every carpet lie dozens of processes, with our artisans polishing each detail until it’s right.
The real craft is what you can’t see
These details may not be obvious at first glance, but they’re exactly what shapes every moment of a guest’s stay. Because true luxury is never proclaimed — it’s laid, one thread at a time.
A carpet sits there, quietly, holding the entire texture of the space. That is what we most wanted to protect when we made this one.
