When we took on the Shangri-La Ulaanbaatar project, we knew this was far more than laying a floor. In a space where the vastness of the steppe meets the brand’s luxury, a carpet has to carry far more than it appears to.
Starting from the character of the space
Shangri-La Ulaanbaatar’s guestrooms and ballroom have very different temperaments: rooms want quiet intimacy, the ballroom wants grand ceremony. We wove these two needs into the carpets of each zone.
Colours and patterns weren’t copied from a template; they grew out of the hotel’s overall mood, so every carpet feels as if it belongs to the space.
Weaving poetry into the weave
The vastness of the Mongolian steppe isn’t forced through literal motifs; it becomes a breathing rhythm of lines and colour, tucked quietly into the weave.
With every step a guest takes, they feel that openness and calm of the grassland — that’s the experience we wanted to give.
Warmth in the details
From materials to sampling, this carpet went through many rounds of refinement. A hand-made base is dense, the pile sturdy, and it carries that ‘living’ quality that grows richer with use.
